Voices, audio and sound effects
Hearing the word is the heart of a spelling test — here's how the audio works and how to fix it when it doesn't.
How the audio works
Every word is read by a text-to-speech voice matched to your practice language. Tap the speaker (or Click to hear the word) to hear it again — repeating a word costs nothing and is not penalised.
Hearing words is free on every plan. It is not a premium feature and it does not use sparks.
Sound effects
Coin pickups, chimes and celebration sounds are separate from the word audio, and can be switched off in ⚙️ Settings → Sound effects — useful in a classroom or a quiet room. Turning them off does not silence the words.
If you hear nothing
Work through these in order: check the device isn't on silent (iPhones mute web audio with the physical switch); turn the volume up while a round is open; tap the speaker directly, because some browsers only allow audio after a tap; then reload the page. If it is still silent, tell us which device and browser you are on and we'll dig in.
Common questions
Can I choose a different accent?
Each language uses one carefully chosen voice today. If a particular accent matters for your child's exams, tell us which — it's the kind of request that gets built.
Can I slow the voice down?
Not yet. Replaying the word as many times as needed is the current answer, and it's unlimited.
